Yvette Bremer, the star behind the scorers’ table!

If you regularly attend a match of Yoast United, Lekdetec or the Dreamfields Dolphins, the face of 26-year-old Yvette Bremer will certainly be familiar to you. Last season she sat at the scorers’ table for 16 home games, keeping the scoresheet or the clock. Reason enough to get to know Yvette a little better.

From her holiday address, where she is enjoying a wonderful trip with her parents Harry and Caroline, sister Eva and brother Koen, Yvette takes a moment to answer our questions. That Yvette would end up at Sporthal de Bongerd (and later at De Kooi) was to be expected given her family. Both her father and mother have a rich history within Batouwe Basketball. Yvette started playing basketball at Batouwe Basketball at the age of nine, after her brother came home full of enthusiasm following a few trial sessions. That was reason enough for Yvette to give it a try too.

These days Yvette still plays for Dames 3 and works as an educational developer. Alongside playing, she therefore also very regularly sits at the scorers’ table for the matches of the national-league teams at De Kooi. When we ask how Yvette started out as a table official, she has to think hard: “Phew, that’s a good question, because it was quite a while ago. I was already often to be found in the sports hall and regularly did the table at matches. I think at some point Kor de Jonge asked me whether I fancied doing it for the women’s first team (Lekdetec) too. That was back when they had only just started playing in the Eredivisie.”

When we ask what she enjoys most about being at the table for these matches, Yvette clearly needs less time to think: “I always find it very enjoyable at the table because it’s such a nice group of people. It’s a serious job, but we also have a lot of fun in between. And I like that you have a bit more contact with the referees, coaches and players.”

Asked about her highlight, Yvette names the memorable buzzer-beater by Loyce Bettonvil in Lekdetec.nl’s match against Binnenland in April 2014. “I was at the scorers’ table and responsible for the clock, which had one second left on it. It was tense for a moment, but that made it all the more special when they won afterwards. The release was enormous!” Fortunately, Patrick Kathmann put the footage on YouTube.

Yvette was also one of the few present at Yoast United’s first cup final in Zwolle, where she operated the game clock as timer. She hopes to experience that celebration once more, but in a full arena: “It was a wonderful experience and I thought it was really great to be there, but the atmosphere and enthusiasm of a packed hall is of course the very best thing.”

The team of table officials is looking to expand and, as Yvette noted above, it is a serious yet enjoyable job among nice people. “The more people who can help with the table, the more flexibly it can all be scheduled. You decide yourself when and how often you’re there. We’re grateful for every contribution,” Yvette concludes the interview.
