De Groene Uilen 69

Men 1 beat De Groene Uilen 90-69 at De Kooi on Saturday evening. That is revenge for the 75-80 defeat in Groningen in September.

United started fiercely and focused. The game ran through Olaf Janssen inside, and Bart van Schaik lifted the team to a higher level with his effort. The first quarter ended 36-18 and it was 55-30 at halftime (73-51 after three quarters). De Groene Uilen made 12 threes, but never got into the game.

Keime Helfrich was like a fish in water. He scored 30 points, from close range and from distance, and also took the team by the hand on defense. In his first home game, Bart van Schaik scored 25 points. Led by guards Diego Rueda Alvarez and Marijn Morsch, the team got up to speed nicely.

Gijs van de Kamp scored 10 points, Olaf Janssen 8, Floris van Dee 6 and Robin Simonis 5. Three players scored 2 points each. Floris played an excellent game, especially on defense.

Our team played strongly as a unit, on defense and offense. The rebounding looked good too, and our fans saw an attractive game. Team manager Wieger Kamies: “We are back in the mix at the top, but only if this level and effort is the starting point every game and keeps being built upon.”

At 4-2, Men 1 are in the top three of the Promotiedivisie, level on points with Attacus and Utrecht Basketball. The men have next weekend off. The away game at Utrecht Basketball in Vleuten follows on Sunday 15 November (16:00). There is still something to put right there.

Report: team manager Wieger Kamies.
